Famous for its furs and its caviar, the capital of Oblast of the same name is located on the Volga, upstream of the delta, to approximately 50 km of the Caspian Sea. City of more than 530,000 inhabitants, Astrakhan is a big city, cosmopolitan, who has also a rich history: Astrakhan was, of 1466 to 1556, the capital of a Mongolian khanat resulting from the bursting of the territory of the Gold Horde. In 1554, the Russians conquer the khanat and install a khan marionette there. A revolt bursts, but it is repressed and the khanat is purely and simply annexed by Russia in 1556. In 1559, the province resists an attack of the khanat close to the Crimea. In 1708 the area is part of the government of Kazan before in being detached in 1717. Astrakhan becomes then for more than 200 years the capital of the government of Astrakhan (1717-1928). The city is today part of the economic basin of the Volga. The Gazprom company has many installations there.

Astrakhan fut, de 1466 à 1556, la capitale d'un khanat mongol issu de l'éclatement du territoire de la Horde d'Or. En 1554, les Russes conquièrent le khanat et y installent un khan fantoche. En 1708 la région fait partie du gouvernement de Kazan avant d’en être détachée en 1717. Astrakhan devient alors pour plus de 200 ans la capitale du gouvernement d'Astrakhan (1717-1928).
La ville fait aujourd'hui partie du bassin économique de la Volga. La société Gazprom y a de nombreuses installations.
